Parasitic Births by Deborah Sheldon

The pain bites deep, an endless flood
from stricken womb, a stream of blood.
Not menopause, no, couldn’t be,
it’s monsters that she cannot see
with hair and teeth, they rend and scud.

Pronouncement – fibroids – growths that bud
through walls of wombs like weeds in mud.
The answer – hysterectomy.
The pain bites deep.

A surgeon’s paid to purge the crud—
he’ll let them loose instead. Dear God!
The bastard wants them roaming free
to chew through liver, bowel, kidney,
and this he does, he splits the pod.
The pain bites deep.
